A Measure of Robustness to Misspecification

چکیده

Suppose a researcher wants to predict the causal effect of a new policy or treatment, based on a data set containing information on some characteristics and outcomes for a large set of units. The researcher might specify a statistical model relating the outcomes, treatments, and characteristics, estimate that model, and use the results to predict the effect of the policy or treatment. The researcher typically then reports the point estimate of the policy effect as well as a measure of the uncertainty surrounding that point estimate (e.g. the standard error). Such measures of uncertainty depend on the model specification. Often, however, there is also substantial uncertainty regarding the specification of the model. There are typically elements of the specification that are relatively ad hoc, and different choices for those specification decisions would have left to different point estimates of the effect of the policy. Previously, Leamer (1982, 1983) argues that the credibility of much empirical work is very low partly because of specification searches that underly the estimates for the reported models. He proposes reporting estimates based on a larger class of models for a range of prior distributions. White (2000) proposes codifying the model searching process and reporting standard errors that take into account this process. However, it is not standard practice to follow these proposals. In practice researchers typically address the issue by reporting estimates for a small number of different specifications to assess the sensitivity of the estimates to

Introducing Capacity Surface to Estimate Watermarking Capacity

One of the most important parameters in evaluating a watermarking algorithm is its capacity. Generally, watermarking capacity is expressed by bits per pixel (bpp) unit measure. But this measure does not show what the side effects would be on image quality, watermark robustness and capacity. In this paper we propose a three dimensional measure named Capacity surface which shows the effects of ca...

Robustness of Bayesian Pool-Based Active Learning Against Prior Misspecification

We study the robustness of active learning (AL) algorithms against prior misspecification: whether an algorithm achieves similar performance using a perturbed prior as compared to using the true prior. In both the average and worst cases of the maximum coverage setting, we prove that all α-approximate algorithms are robust (i.e., near α-approximate) if the utility is Lipschitz continuous in the...

On the Effect of Skewness and Kurtosis Misspecification on the Hedging Error

Using a result in Angelini and Herzel (2009a), we measure, in terms of variance, the cost of hedging a contingent claim when the hedging portfolio is re-balanced at a discrete set of dates. We analyze the dependence of the variance of the hedging error on the skewness and kurtosis as modeled by a Normal Inverse Gaussian model. We consider two types of strategies, the standard Black-Scholes Delt...

Fast Least Square Matching

Least square matching (LSM) is one of the most accurate image matching methods in photogrammetry and remote sensing. The main disadvantage of the LSM is its high computational complexity due to large size of observation equations. To address this problem, in this paper a novel method, called fast least square matching (FLSM) is being presented. The main idea of the proposed FLSM is decreasing t...

Rationalization and Robustness in Dynamic Games with Incomplete Information: Extended Abstract

In the game theoretic environment, there is a clear tension between the strength of a solution concept and its robustness to misspecification. In other words, if the analyst wants his model to be resilient to small errors in the parameters, then he must weaken the predictive power of the model. In fact, this tension can be made formal; under a richness assumption (loosely speaking, for every st...

A New Approach Generating Robust and Stable Schedules in m-Machine Flow Shop Scheduling Problems: A Case Study

This paper considers a scheduling problem with uncertain processing times and machine breakdowns in industriall/office workplaces and solves it via a novel robust optimization method. In the traditional robust optimization, the solution robustness is maintained only for a specific set of scenarios, which may worsen the situation  for new scenarios. Thus, a two-stage predictive algorithm is prop...
